The DC Government's Deputy Mayor for Planning & Economic Development (DMPED) is redeveloping the fire station currently used by Engine Company 12 at 5th Street NE and Rhode Island Avenue NE. The 6-story project will include 136 units of housing (95 market, 41 affordable) and commercial uses as well as a modernized fire station on the site. DMPED is currently negotiating with Rift Valley Partners for construction to take place in 2029 to 2033 (which includes a temporary fire station location nearby during construction, and does *not* include a library).
January 2021: DMPED requests site zoning change to mixed use.
April 2021: Zoning Commission approves site zoning change to mixed use.
November 2021: DMPED requests proposals from potential developers.
November 2022: Two developers submit proposals by the deadline.
January 2023: DMPED presents to ANC 5F on the project, answering questions from commissioners and the public.
March 2023: DMPED selects Rift Valley Partners as project developer and begins negotiations.
